چکیده

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a complex pool of compounds with key role in the global carbon cycle. To understand its natural and engineered systems, efficient approaches are necessary for tracking DOM quality quantity. Fluorescence spectroscopy combined parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) very widely used to identify quantify different fractions as proxies source, concentration biogeochemical processing. A major limitation PARAFAC approach requirement large data set containing many variable samples which vary independently. This severely curtails possibilities study fluorescence composition behavior small or unique datasets. Herein, we present simple inexpensive experimental procedure that makes it possible mathematically decompose dataset only highly-correlated fluorescent fractions. The approach, uses widely-available commercial extraction sorbents previously established protocols expand original inject missing chemical variability, can be implemented at low cost. demonstration shows how robust six-component model extracted from even river-water five bulk samples. Widespread adoption analyzing datasets needed confirm suspected ubiquity certain create shared inventory ubiquitous components. Such an could greatly simplify improve use tool investigate processing diverse water sources.

Improved fluorescence excitation-emission matrix regional integration to quantify spectra for fluorescent dissolved organic matter.

The purpose of this short communication is to demonstrate the importance of numerical analysis and wavelength increment selection when characterizing fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) using fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) regional integration. A variety of water samples, representing a landscape gradient and different types of FDOM, were analyzed for their percentage dis...

Synchronous fluorescence spectra of dissolved organic matter (DOM) of algal origin in marine coastal waters

Naturally occurring dissolved organic matter [DOM) was investigated in a lagoonal system with the aim to study the origin and mixing of the Doh4 components. Water samples were collected in the Sacca di Goro lagoon (PO river delta, Italy) and analysed by means of different techniques, such as fluorescence, absorpt~on and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) measurements. Synchronous fluorescence spect...

Using Dissolved Organic Matter Fluorescence to Signal Changes in Carbon Cycling During a Cave Stream Experiment

Cover Photo: Cave salamanders (Eurycea lucifuga) are often found in the "twilight zone " area. This zone is near the entrance of the cave where a small amount of natural light still falls. E. lucifuga feed mainly on various insects and spiders. In the fall one might find their eggs in little crevices of rocks that have water/moisture in them or along rimstone pools. This particular specimen was...

Temperature Dependence of Photodegradation of Dissolved Organic Matter to Dissolved Inorganic Carbon and Particulate Organic Carbon

Photochemical transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been studied for more than two decades. Usually, laboratory or "in-situ" experiments are used to determine photodegradation variables. A common problem with these experiments is that the photodegradation experiments are done at higher than ambient temperature. Five laboratory experiments were done to determine the effect of temp...
